Hello from A to Z. I like these sayings. We might not get everything we want, but we can still be grateful for what we have.

Thanks for this post! I think I’m a pretty grateful person but I do have my struggles.

Last Septemeber, we lost five buildings, vehicles, tractors, a much-loved dog, a flock of chickens, our horse, quads, travel trailer, all the tools we own, a horse trailer, etc…. in the Valley Fire. We do still have our home and our lives. I really struggle to find the blessing in this experience. We are probably down $300,000 in under insured losses (it’s our own fault not knowing the insurance limits of certain classes of items). Today I’m finally getting a little glimpse of the blessing behind the fire. Our new barn is almost done, and we have two foundations ready for a new garage and tractor barn. The loss of our pets is still hard. Today we learned from a first responder the cause of the fire. He said it was a meth lab, cannabis oil, and an illegal charging station. Four people dead (at one point I thought my son and I would die), 1,280+ houses burned down. Not cool. It’s hard not to get mad.

Oh my goodness! I’m so sorry to hear of your losses, especially the animals.
I’m glad you and your son survived.
The Valley Fire, was that the northern California fire, near Middletown/Hidden Valley Lake? I had a friend that had to evacuate, but fortunately her home was saved.
With things like this, it is difficult to find the gratitude in it – other than you and your son still being alive. The rest…not so easy.
      Hugs and love to you.

Yes, it’s the Middletown/CobbMountian/ HVL Fire. My oldest daughter’s boyfriend of forever, his family lost everything except the clothes on their backs and the cars they were driving. They lived in HVL and sadly lost their two dogs too.

Thanks for your hugs! Small world that you know people who had to evacuate.

Do you know Barbara Sinor? She’s in HVL.

No, I don’t know her. We live out in the country between Middletown and the HVL, out by the glider port. We had to drive through fire on both sides of our road and the highway to evacuate. My neighbor left her house at the same time I did. Her car ended up catching on fire because fire was raining down from the sky (embers, burning branches, etc). She ended up getting into five different cars to escape the fire. Crazy!

I’ve heard stories and have seen video of people having to evacuate from HVL, and how the cars were lined up in a big traffic jam with buildings on fire right by the road. One person told me they had to drive on the golf course just to get out.

Oh my goodness. That is so far beyond scary that I can’t even comprehend it.
As awful as it all was, I’m so glad you were safe and not one of the casualties.

Thank you for the lenses of gratitude. I do try but don’t always succeed…but that’s life as well.
